Puppies are not sedated for shipping, this can be very dangerous to the puppy due to unknown side effects medications can have on dogs just like humans.
Shipping is safe, but if you are too concerned, weigh out the pros and cons of driving or traveling yourself to meet your new puppy.
Animals must have an Airline approved travel kennel
The travel kennel must have a food and water dish
The pup must be seen by a licensed Veterinarian within 10 days of travel for a USDA Travel Health Certificate.
If the puppy is greater than 12 weeks, it must have a rabies vaccination.
I use American Airlines, if unable to use this airline, I will research alternative airlines that are in both areas.

Shipping Procedure
A travel kennel is purchased by Sand Valley Weims.
Food and water dishes are provided.
The travel kennel is prepared the night before with Sand Valley Weims Labels, Live Animal Labels, and a puppy packet with the AKC Registration paperwork is attached to the kennel.
The puppy is allowed to play, sleep, investigate travel crates throughout its time with us, we leave some open for them to get familiar with.
A bag of food is attached to the kennel and feeding instructions are filled out for Airline Personnel.
Within 10 days of your puppy traveling he/she will see the vet for a thorough exam and will be issued a USDA (United Stated Department of Agriculture) Health Certificate for travel and possibly a certificate of weather acclimation if needed depending on the destination.
Your puppy will have a nice relaxing bath the night prior to leaving for his or her new home.
